Angel Poems and Prayers

Catholic Guardian Angel Prayer

Angel of God, my Guardian dear,

to whom His love commits me here,

Ever this day be at my side

to light and guard, to rule and guide,

- Praise the Lord

all you Angels of the Lord!

Psalm 148:2

Guardian Angel Prayer

Guardian Angel from heaven so bright,

Watching beside me to lead me aright,

Fold thy wings round me,

and guard me with love,

Softly sing songs to me of heaven above.

A Mother's Prayer to her Children's Guardian Angel

I humbly salute you,

O you faithful, heavenly Friends of my children!

I give you heartfelt thanks for all the love and goodness you show them.

At some future day I shall, with thanks more worthy than I can now give, repay your care for them, and before the whole heavenly court acknowledge their indebtedness to your guidance and protection.

Continue to watch over them.

Provide for all their needs of body and soul.

Pray, likewise, for me, for my husband, and my whole family, that we may all one day rejoice in your blessed company. Amen

Four Corners to my Bed

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

Bless the bed that I lie on!

Four corners to my bed,

Five angels there lie spread;

Two at my head,

Two at my feet,

One at my heart,

My soul to keep.

Taken from The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes (circa 1920) edited by Walter Jerrold. Percy B. Green, who penned "A History of Nursery Rhymes" in 1899, called this a "Charm Against Ghosts"

Green wrote:

"The Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John rhymes were well known in Essex in Elizabeth's time. Ady, in his 'Candle After Dark,' 1655, mentions an old woman he knew, who had lived from Queen Mary's time, and who had been taught by the priests in those days many Popish charms. The old woman, amongst other rhymes, repeated -

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

The bed be blest that I lay on.

This was to be repeated yearly, thrice on Twelfth Night*, and it would act as a charm until the following year against evil spirits."

*The Twelfth Night is on January 5th, the night before the Epiphany.

Angels, in the early morning

May be seen the Dews among,

Stooping - plucking - smiling - flying -

Do the Buds to them belong?

Angels, when the sun is hottest

May be seen the sands among,

Stooping - plucking - sighing - flying -

Parched the flowers they bear along.

Emily Dickinson

My Guardian Angel

Dear Angel ever at my side,

how lovely you must be-

To leave your home in heaven,

to guard a child like me.

When I'm far away from home,

or maybe hard at play-

I know you will protect me,

from harm along the way.

Your beautiful and shining face,

I see not, though you're near.

The sweetness of your lovely voice,

I cannot really hear.

When I pray, you're praying too,

Your prayer is just for me.

But, when I sleep you never do,

You're watching over me.

psalm 91:11-12

There is a little angel

you can put her in your pocket

wear her on a brooch

or place her in a locket

Your angel's always with you

Wherever that you go

She'll always be right by you

Your heart will tell you so
